US to render assistance to victims of Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, says FM

The information about that the US Senate has allocated financial aid to the separatist regime of Nagorno-Karabakh is untrue, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov told reporters July 10.

The aid has been allocated to the victims of Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, said the minister. “That’s to say, the assistance will be rendered to all those who became victims of Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, including Azerbaijanis.”

“Therefore, don’t believe the false information,” he said. ‘The information saying that the aid has been allocated only to Armenians is untrue.”

“If you read this document, you will see that the US government will render assistance to the victims of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict,” Mammadyarov added.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the US are currently holding peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the UN Security Council’s four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
