Baku, Azerbaijan, June 18

By Seba Aghayeva – Trend:

The UN special rapporteur for internally displaced persons has urged Armenia to implement the resolutions of the UN General Assembly and the Security Council on Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

This said in the report submitted by the UN Special Rapporteur Chaloka Beyani at the 29th session of the UN Human Rights Council, prepared following the recent visit to Azerbaijan.

The independent experts of the working group of the UN Human Rights Council noted the fact of occupation of Nagorno-Karabakh and seven adjacent districts of Azerbaijan, the Permanent Mission of Azerbaijan to the UN Geneva Office told Trend June 18.

The early settlement of the conflict is necessary first of all in order to fully restore the violated rights of internally displaced persons in Azerbaijan, the report said.

It was also mentioned that great success in the economic sphere, the elimination of poverty and the fight against corruption have been achieved in Azerbaijan in recent years.

Independent experts said that Azerbaijani government has implemented a series of measures to improve the living standards of refugees and internally displaced persons.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the US are currently holding peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented the UN Security Council’s four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
