The European Union is concerned about rising tensions related to the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini said.
She made the remarks during the 22nd OSCE Ministerial Council in Belgrade, Serbia.
Mogherini added that the EU is concerned about low progress in conflict resolution related to Transnistria and further entrenchment of the conflict in Georgia.
She said the organization urges all parties involved in the conflicts to work in good faith towards political solutions that respect OSCE principles and commitments.
Moreover, the European Union remains committed to be actively involved in the process of settling the conflicts, Mogherini added.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.
The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the US are currently holding peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented the UN Security Council’s four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
