Azerbaijan expects concrete position on Karabakh conflict from West

At present, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev sees his main task in the stable and secure development of Azerbaijan as an independent country and exerts efforts in this area, Novruz Mammadov, the deputy head of Azerbaijani presidential administration, chief of the administration’s foreign relations department, told media July 24.

Mammadov said that President Aliyev is able to take and is taking all necessary actions to achieve this.

“At least once, Azerbaijan awaits for a position of the West, the European countries regarding the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict in the specific legal framework,” he said. “But, unfortunately, they do not do this and can not do this.”

Mammadov said that earlier, Azerbaijan did not join the association agreement at the Vilnius summit.

"A lot of comments were made towards Azerbaijan,” he said. “Why did not Azerbaijan do this? Which way does it follow? What is it doing and why? But none of the critics noted that the association agreement with EU doesn’t reflect the issue of Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity.”

“Why were Moldova, Ukraine and Georgia mentioned, but Azerbaijan wasn’t?” he asked. “One must understand that the step taken by Azerbaijan is right one.”

The top official said that during the last government meeting, President Ilham Aliyev expressed a concrete position on cooperation with EU.

“Indeed, it was the culmination of the processes going on up to the present day,” he said.

Following this, the EU began to think that Azerbaijan is not like other countries and they can’t have the same attitude to this country as to others, because, Azerbaijan’s position is fair and right, according to Mammadov.

“The visit of European Council’s President Donald Tusk to Azerbaijan became one of the factors proving that this was taken into account,” he said. “Very broad negotiations were held during this visit.”
