Armenia violates ceasefire with Azerbaijan over 75 times in a day

Over the past 24 hours, the Armenian military 76 times violated ceasefire on various parts of the contact line between Azerbaijani and Armenian troops, said Azerbaijan’s Defense Ministry on May 12.

The armed forces of Armenia stationed in the village of Vazashen of Armenia’s Ijevan district opened fire on the Azerbaijani armed forces’ positions on the nameless heights in the Gazakh district of Azerbaijan.

The Armenians stationed in the villages of Aygepar, Mosesgeh and Chinari of Armenia’s Berd district opened fire on the Azerbaijani military positions in the villages of Alibayli, Aghdam and Kokhanabi of the Tovuz district.

The positions of the Azerbaijani military also came under fire from Armenians’ positions near the Tapgaragoyunlu village of Goranboy district, Yarimja, Chilyaburt, Goyarkh, Gizil Oba villages of Terter district, Shuraabad, Shikhlar, Yusifjanli, Kangarli, Garagashli, Bash Garvand villages of Aghdam district, Horadiz, Garakhanbeyli, Ashagi Seyidahmadli, Ashagi Abdurrahmanli villages of Fizuli district and the Mehdili village of Jabrail district.

Armenians also opened fire on the Azerbaijani army positions from nameless heights in the Goranboy, Khojavand, Fuzuli and Jabrail districts.

The opposing side was silenced with return fire.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the US are currently holding peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented the UN Security Council’s four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
